Community Services
The Tumbler Ridge Community Services Department manages the leisure services for the District. The department is responsible for providing a wide range of leisure opportunities to the residents so that they may lead healthy, active, productive lives. 
 
We strive to benefit the community through continual efforts to improve our services, having trained qualified staff, operating efficiently, increasing usage, maintaining contact with other leisure professionals, building on special event programs, and enhancing overall building opportunities.
Some of the specific functions of the department include:
 
  • Offering a variety of leisure opportunities that will appeal to all demographics within our community
  • Building on special events such as Canada Day, Grizfest, the Terry Fox Run, Easter, Halloween, Christmas and Community Registration Night
  • District liaison services for non–profit groups and organizations
  • Compilation and distribution of quarterly leisure programming brochures
  • Maintaining infrastructure

Chuck was born and raised in Port Alberni.  He is married to Rosa and they have an 18 year old son Andrew.  They also have a 16-year old cat.
 
Chuck has Diploma's in Leisure Services and Physical Education, from Malaspina College in Nanaimo. He also has a degree in Education from UBC.  Chuck continues to upgrade his skills and has taken additional courses in municipal administration through Comosun College in Victoria, and training in emergency planning and safety.
 
Prior to joining Tumbler Ridge, Check had four years experience as Manager of Recreation and Tourism in Hudson’s Hope, 13 years experience as Parks, Recreation, and Culture Manager in Hope, and seven years experience in private business including managing Moorecroft Camp and Retreat.
 
Chuck spent 12 years as a trustee on the Fraser Cascade School District, plus many years as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and coaching and managing in minor hockey and other sports.
 
The family enjoys golf, walking, hiking, hockey, X-country skiing, and being active and are looking forward to living, working, and participating, and playing in Tumbler Ridge.
